Monument Lake is a reservoir in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains

In the mountains near Trinidad, Colorado, you can find the thirty-acre reservoir called Monument Lake. Open from May to October, Monument Lake is a beautiful setting for swimming and water sports. The lake features a fishing area and toilets, as well as a scenic shoreline. Paddleboarders and kayakers can take advantage of the lake’s clear water and picturesque scenery. The reservoir is accessible for free to the public.

It was built in 1872

The Monument Creek Park, a free recreational area, is situated next to the park’s namesake, the mountain of Monument. The park was built in 1872. The town was originally known as Dirty Woman Gulch. In 1861, soldiers passing through the area dubbed the town’s resident the Dirty Woman for her filthy appearance. Though she was far from a model of cleanliness, she still managed to care for a flock of sheep and goats and turn milk into butter with her bare feet.

It is a No Wake Lake

As the name suggests, Monument Lake is a No Wake Lake. This means that all motors and watercraft must be electric. This lake is also not suitable for swimming due to its alligator population. To avoid the dangers of alligators, a sign on the water warns fishermen to fish at their own risk. The lake is open all year round, but during the winter, the lake freezes over.

It has a zoo

The Monument Lake complex includes a zoo and fish hatchery. Both facilities were built in the early twentieth century, part of a trend toward recreational activities in the country. Located near Trinidad in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the complex features Works Progress Administration (WPA) Rustic-style construction. During your visit, you can view more than 200 species of animals and learn about conservation efforts.

It has a campground

If you are looking for a quiet, rustic camping experience in the Big Cypress National Preserve, consider Monument Lake Campground. There are plenty of sites available for RVs, tents, and vans, all located close to the lake. Some of the sites have concrete sewer and water hookups. You can also find a picnic table and outdoor fire pit. The campground accepts online reservations. This is an excellent option for people traveling alone or with limited space.

It has a lodge

Visitors to Monument Lake will be delighted to know that the resort features a new bathhouse complete with ADA-compliant showers and restrooms. A laundry facility is also open to all guests. There are thirteen private cabins on the property. Many of these feature added extras and are available for seasonal or permanent rental.
