Nirvana

Nirvana played the headline set at the Caveman Music Festival in August 1991, despite a rocky relationship between Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love. Rumors were rife about Cobain’s drug addiction and Courtney’s pregnancy. The group’s headlining performance was described as “wonderful” by critics, and fans applauded the band’s performance. The headline set also featured cover versions of Lithium, Smells Like Teen Spirit, and Come As You Are.

Alternative rock, or alt-rock, is a subgenre of popular music that emerged from the independent music underground in the 1970s. Although it did not hit mainstream success until the late 1980s, it is still a distinct genre, a distinct contrast from the commercialism of pop culture. Although many of its artists have since reached mainstream success, it was Nirvana’s unique sound that brought alternative rock into mainstream consciousness. Although many fans of Nirvana may consider their music unapproachable, they’ve also seen their concert ticket sales eclipse the numbers of many of today’s most popular pop-rock artists.
