On Friday, a Chinese delegation visited Mamallapuram as part of preparations for an informal summit to be held in Chennai from October 11 to 13. While this may be an unofficial confirmation of a Sino-Indian summit, it was also significant that the Chinese delegation was accompanied by state security and intelligence units. The eight-member team included senior security officials. They inspected the security arrangements in hotels in the area.

The festival features numerous types of dances and is a reflection of the rich culture of the area. The festival is held every December and January in the town of Mamallapuram, which was once a major port during the Pallava period. It features a wide variety of dance forms performed by exponents of many different dance styles. The performances take place in an open-air auditorium surrounded by ancient sculptures.

The town is 55 km from Chennai and was once home to the Pallava culture that flourished in the seventh and eighth centuries. It is now the home of a three-week dance festival organized by the Tamil Nadu Tourism Department. It features dance forms from Bharathanatyam, Mohiniyattam, Kathak, Odissi, and Kathakali.
