The Sangre de Cristo Mountains form the backdrop for this scenic lake, which is located about 37 miles west of Trinidad. The pristine body of water has a long shoreline, and is a ppular fishing spot. At 3,435 feet above sea level, the climate here is mild and sunny with an average of twenty percent chance of rain each day.

If you’re looking for a place to get away from the city, Monument Lake Resort offers tent and dry camping. It’s a 368-acre park-like setting located between La Veta and Trinidad on Hwy 12. Visitors can explore the area and spend hours hiking, or enjoy the many other activities at the resort. You’ll also find plenty of hiking trails nearby in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Cuchara is an excellent example of a local trail.
