The gathering of thousands of young people required an outlet for their music and creative energy, and it delivered that and more. Though the Woodstock music festival took place during the Vietnam War, the overall atmosphere was surprisingly peaceful. The New York State Historic Preservation Office has applied to add 600 acres of the festival site and the adjacent campgrounds to the National Register of Historic Places. A decision is expected in February 2019.
