Where is Colorado located? This state is divided into four main geographic regions: the Great Plains, alpine mountains, and desert-like basins. Rocky Mountain National Park
Located on the Continental Divide, Rocky Mountain National Park encompasses mountains, forests, and alpine tundra. You can hike, bike, or drive in the park, exploring the mountain peaks and trails along the way. The Park is famous for the Keyhole Route, which crosses vertical rock faces and leads to the top of Longs Peak. Other highlights include a trip to Bear Lake, which offers breathtaking views of the peaks.
The park covers 415 square miles and encompasses part of the Front Range, the line of mountains that mark the eastern edge of the Southern Rocky Mountains. The park is characterized by dozens of peaks above 12,000 feet, including Longs Peak, at 14,259 feet high. The park also contains a large area of glacier-carved valleys and plunging streams, all evidence of Ice Age glacial deposition. The park is cut by the Continental Divide, which runs northwest to southeast through the park’s central region. The Colorado River flows south through the Arapaho National Recreation Area and southwest through the park’s southern section.

The park is open year-round, although it is most popular in summer. However, if you’re visiting during the winter, the park is perfect for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. There is even a 2-mile snowmobile trail that connects Grand Lake to the Arapaho National Forest. The off-season is the best time to visit Rocky Mountain National Park because of its quietness and solitude. You can also bring your pet along as long as it’s on a leash.
